Happy Mon. Gray here after a nice day yesterday and rain on Saturday. It froze Saturday night and again last night. Most of the trees are bare, but a few patches of birch still sport bright yellow leaves. Yesterday we washed windows, cleaned out the rain gutter, moved the winter tires from the dog kennel out back down to the driveway, got out the snow shovels, and generally moved forward with preparations for winter. I am hoping for a couple more weeks before the cold arrives. Maybe with the weird weather the world has witnessed wecently, I will get my wish.

We watched the 1983 movie Terms of Endearment, with Shirley McLain, Jack Nicholson, Debra Winger, and Jeff Daniels. Not many movies can combine hilarious comedy with tear-jerk pathos, but this one does. Ebert gave it his top rating, but Pauline Kael of The New Yorker thought it was smarmy. Take your pick. We must be susceptible to smarm because we enjoyed it a lot. The acting was excellent. McLain and Nicholson both won AAs for their roles. Winger was nominated but didn’t win. The film won best picture. Based on the book by Larry McMurtry.
