We watched (for the second time) Sita Sings the Blues, an animated movie by Nina Paley that blends the story of the Sanskrit Epic The Ramayana, Paley’s life, and the jazz singing of twenties femme fatale Annette Hanshaw, “the personality girl.” That seems an unlikely combination, but it works surprisingly well and produces a humorous, slightly wacky story that should please just about anybody. The animation is in a style unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere. If you haven’t seen this film, you’ve missed a charming experience.
