Happy Wed. Another nice morning after a little rain at the outset. We saw a “robin” in the yard this morning, which caught our attention because we haven’t seen one for several weeks. It turned out to be a Varied Thrush. There were two of them, a female and junior. Dad, who is brightly colored, […]

Good Tuesday. Another nice day here. Last evening I smelled the high bush cranberry smell emanating from the woods that signals the end of summer. There are patches of yellow in the birches. The fireweed has turned red. I saw a small group of cranes flying south. Local news includes another obit for a Fairbanks-based […]

Good Monday. Nice day here, sun shining after pretty nice weather this weekend. We went to Creamer’s Field wildlife refuge to look at the cranes and geese staging for their flight south. The remaining ducks are mostly mallards. We finished up Season Three of Mad Men and can take a breather until Season Four is […]

Happy Thursday. Nice day here, sunny. Started out at 43 degrees. Yokelly, the foxes continue to hang around the yard nearly every day. Meanwhile, the bird population is thinning. Last week, in addition to our bountiful populations of black-capped chickadees and dark-eyed juncos, we had ruby-crowned kinglets, yellow-rumped warblers, a flycatcher, and a hermit thrush. […]

Rain here. Like yesterday. The Fall colors are appearing. Yellow leaves in the birch trees, yellow and red leaves on the wild rose bushes, the fireweed turning red. We watched Truman, with Gary Sinise playing President Harry S. Truman. It was an HBO movie, so a bit low-budget, but well done nonetheless. Worth seeing if […]

Good Tues. Nice day here, sunny, with wind. We watched Out of Africa over the weekend, the 1985 movie with Robert Redford and Meryl Streep recounting the story of the Danish Baroness Karen von Blixen-Finecke, known to the world as Isak Dinesen, whose books about Africa have sold millions of copies. Streep is outstanding, as […]

Happy Friday. Beautiful morning here and very changeable weather yesterday, from rain to shine. We watched a History Channel program on Teddy Roosevelt that was quite good. You may recall that the four presidents depicted at Mt. Rushmore are Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and TR. By all accounts TR was a force of nature. He suffered […]

Happy Tues. Gray here with a little rain now and then after a sunny evening yesterday. Not to much to report. We finished listening to The Two Towers, by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, which we started while driving on vacation. Last year we listened to The Fellowship of the Ring. I guess next year it […]

Happy Monday. Kind of grayish here. Could burn off. It rained yesterday afternoon, but was sunny most of Sat. The fair is in progress, so at the hint of a sun day I am heading over to view the elephants. We watched a NOVA special on The Crash of Flight 447, the 2009 Air France […]

Nosy (October 1997 – August 3, 2011) Nosy consistently outfoxed the foxes, but she ate something last summer that poisoned her and damaged her kidneys. She was on death’s doorstep last July but recovered sufficiently to enjoy another year of ranging the neighboring woodland and hibernating over the winter. This week her kidneys finally gave […]
